SAUGUS GU14
ALL-STARS, GOING TO BAKERSFIELD |
 |
January 29, 2006 – (Newhall, CA) Morning broke and a beautiful day
was about to begin. The Area 10-S Championship game lied ahead for
the All-star girls of Region 46. There was a short supply of
Wheaties in the stores that morning as the Saugus All-stars of
Region 46 took the soccer field for the showdown at high noon. The
Valencia team seemed nervous during their warm up before the game.
The Saugus All-stars have been given a redemption game against the
only team to beat them and now the Championship was on the line.
The Saugus All-stars took the field with determination and
offensively dominated the first quarter. Terra Panicia, fighting
through a double team, managed to clear the ball from mid field and
got it to her forwards. Mandi Pugliese stepped up and found an
opening in the Valencia defense and shot the ball past the keeper
and the first the goal |
|
was scored and the Saugus All-stars were beginning to
have the taste of the championship they all wanted. The game
continued with excellent defense from Rebecca Pieropan, Amber Argon,
Amy Gragas, Georgia Druliner and Brittany Krieg. One thing became
apparent early in the game; the Saugus goalkeeper came prepared for
victory.
Kate Wieselthier wound up playing keeper the entire
game and was by far the player of the game. Her keeper skills were
impeccable. Valencia was stifled for three quarters of play and
Kate was awesome. She demonstrated excellent keeper skills,
challenging the offense of Valencia, diving blocks and aggressively
challenging any shooters, the Valencia team could not score. The
Saugus All-stars controlled the middle of the field like any
championship team does, Jolie Stroh, Mel Cabrera and Shannon Clarke
demonstrated excellent field management skills in the middle and
continued to supply our forwards with the ball. Valencia finally
managed to slip a goal past the Saugus defense late in the fourth
quarter and now double overtime was inevitable.
The exhausted Saugus All-stars rested for a few
minutes and then back on the field. Both teams played like
champions in the double overtime. Valencia was double teaming our
powerful forwards, Hannah Belanger, Jackie Rowson and Alexis Dubin
throughout the entire overtime periods. The overtime period ended
and the game was still at 1-1.
The shoot out was to begin, and the victor would be
crowned Area 10-S All-star Champions. Saugus sent out Mandi
Pugliese, Jackie Rowson, Mel Cabrera, Terra Panica and Brittany
Krieg to secure the victory in the shoot out. Of course, the player
of the game would secure the goal for Saugus, Kate Wieselthier.
Valencia’s first shot went in and so did Mandi’s first shot. Then
Kate decided that this shoot out would end early. Kate Wieselthier
blocked the next three shots from Valencia and with Saugus not missing
a shot. Then it was up to Mel Cabrera to come up for the game
winning kick, and it was "Hammer Time," MC
came through and fired the ball past the Valencia keeper. The
Saugus All-stars, now Area 10-S Champions, smothered Mel; and Kate with
cheers. The game was intense. Two championship teams played their
hearts out for almost two hours and when the dust settled, the
Saugus All-stars were holding the Championship Title and are heading
to Bakersfield to represent Area 10-S as the best team in the Santa
Clarita Valley.
Congratulations to the talent filled coaches, Scott
Lynch and Don Belanger, that manage these incredibly talented soccer
players,. Also, "thank you" to all of the parents for their support
of the team throughout this enduring experience. |

Challenging Winds, Team Moves On To Final Round |
 |
January 22, 2006 –
(Newhall, CA) A very cold morning started the day for the GU14 AYSO
46 ALL-STAR TEAM. The first game began at 9:00 and so started a
tough defensive struggle between the All-stars from Saugus and the
All stars from Valencia. The Saugus All-stars were battling up and
down the field. Amy Gragas was setting the stage with her
aggressive style of play and excellent footwork that kept the
Valencia All-stars on their heels. The game was being played a
little rough and Saugus’s Terra Panica stood her ground and did not
back down from Valencia’s tough play, continuing to push the ball
through Valencia’s defense throughout the game. Strong keepers from
Saugus, Georgia Druliner, Kate Wieselthier, Brittany Krieg and Amy
Gragas were stifling the offensive threat of the Valencia
All-stars. The scoreless game continued until the late in the
fourth quarter when Valencia |
|
managed to sneak
a weak shot into the net and the game ended with 0-1 loss for the
Saugus All-stars.
Not to be
discouraged and having the knowledge that a win or tie in the second
game against Canyon Country would place them into the Championship
Game next week, the Saugus All-stars showed up with Championship
hunger in their souls. Canyon Country All-stars played well and
managed to score the first goal. Down 0-1 in the second half,
Jackie Rowson decided that she was going to show Canyon Country a
thing or two about Saugus Soccer Spirit. Jackie Rowson, from the
middle of the field, took the ball all the way to the goal and kept
pounding the shots at Canyon Country. Jackie was being double
teamed and knocked down continuously during her tirade on the keeper
but refused to give into the pressure. Jackie finally was able to
push a goal through the tough keeper and defense of Canyon Country
and got back our goal and tied the game. The game ended in a tie and
secured a trip to the Section 10 All Star Championship Game for the
GU14 SAUGUS ALLSTARS. |

| Saugus Takes Castaic In Game
One, 2-0 |
| January 15th - (Newhall, Ca) -
The Saugus GU14 All-Star Team set out on a very windy day to take
game number one of three games, with great success!
In a game that showed strength and power in both
offence and defense, the team was using their heads and had great
control on the ball. Scoring first could be a great boost for
any-team, and Saugus was the one to score first, on a PK.
Being up 1-0 at half-time, the team stayed
pumped and before taking the field for the second half, they showed
their Saugus Pride with the "Go Big Blue" cheer, that even got the
sidelines pride-filled.
Great plays were made by all players.
For a team with only three practices together, they played a
powerful game against Castaic. Ball Control, Speed, and great
heads for the game would show them scoring again, but to be taken
back by a call of "Off-Sides!"
Never letting down, Saugus found themselves
gaining another goal on a PK, bringing them two up against Castaic.
A great job, by a GREAT TEAM!!! |
